“Grand Cayman”

“Grand Cayman” is the largest piece of the triptych “The Cayman Islands” which now

sits in the permanent collection of the National Gallery of the Cayman Islands. This

work addresses shifting political ideologies, population growth, and the quiet

erasure of cultural traditions embedded in daily life. As we modernise, what

fragments of our Caymanian identity are we unconsciously discarding? This piece

asks viewers to consider Grand Cayman not just as a physical territory, but as a

complex emotional and political landscape. The original work was painted on

unprimed canvas so that it would deteriorate over time as the paint and canvas

react with each other. This stands as a metaphor for the effect rapid over

development is having on our islands. These prints offer a version of this image that

will stand the test of time, and serve as a reference point in years to come.
